Cemented clay

Cemented clay

Cementitious clay is a composite material resulting from the combination of clay and cement, used mainly in industrial and construction projects and in the manufacture of large sculptures. This hybrid mixture takes advantage of the plastic and moldable properties of clay, combining them with the hardness, strength and hardening capacity of cement. Cementitious clay is especially valued for its ability to form self-supporting pieces, i.e., those that do not require additional support to stand upright, making it an ideal choice for permanent, large-scale structures. The proportion of cement in the mix can vary, representing up to 50% of the total material, which directly influences the mechanical properties of the final product. As the percentage of cement increases, the mix gains in strength, making it more suitable for outdoor use. This material is especially effective in the creation of construction elements such as pavements, facades, and architectural elements.

Interesting Fact

Cemented clay is used for the creation of architectural ceramics. Instead of being just a decorative material, the cemented clay in these pieces is integrated directly into the building structure, such as walls, pavements and architectural elements, where it not only serves a decorative function, but also a structural one, providing beauty and durability at the same time.

Helpful Tip

If you use cemented clay for sculpting, be sure to test for strength and compatibility before applying to a large-scale project.
